Arabic - An Historic Language

Arabic dates back to a period between the 1st and 4th centuries C.E. Today it is the common language of the Arab World. It is the official language of 26 states and the language of Islam, as the Quran and Hadith were written in Arabic.

It is the sacred languages of 1.8 billion Muslims and of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is the fifth most spoken language in the world. It is written in the Arabic alphabet with a right-to-left orientation.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Arabic was a dominant culture in Europe, particularly in disciplines such as science, mathematics and philosophy. Consequently, many European languages have 'borrowed' from Arabic. It has also influenced many other languages throughout its history such as Persian, Turkish, Hindi and Urdu (Hindustani), Kashmiri, Kurdish, Bosnian, Kazakh, Bengali and many others.
